The Science of Light
How did a Type A scientist who practices modern medicine become an astrologer?
It all started with yoga. I have practiced yoga (the physical asana) for over a decade. One of my dearest friends introduced me to hot yoga in college. Nothing better than sweating out all the toxins you ingested the night before during an intense Sunday AM asana practice. I was immediately hooked. After this, I always felt.. let’s call it a “tug,” to get my yoga teaching certificate. Between completing my undergraduate degree, then masters, then moving to Alaska and starting a dog mushing kennel, it never felt like the “right” time. Not long after moving to AK, my family started to grow. Within 4 years, I had 2 kids, 25 sled dogs, a full time career, and also a relatively busy Airbnb to manage. My plate was FULL. I was going through all the motions but was having a hard time actually FEELING life, it was just a constant “on to the next, on to the next.” I was burnt out and I knew I needed to do something to refill my cup or I was headed to a dark place. It was at this time that the algorithm kicked up Arctic Hive on my IG feed. A 200 hour yoga teacher training in the Arctic was going to take place in just a few short months. The timing was not going to work out on my end but I thought, “Hey, why not reach out and see if there would be an offering in the future that would work with my crazy life.” So I did. And boom, Mollie (the yoga teacher who co-owns Arctic Hive and runs the yoga teacher training) decided to offer a Spring training that I would be able to plan for logistically and financially. The training took place partially online and partially in person in the Arctic. It was a deeply transformational experience for me on many levels but for the sake of keeping your attention, I digress. While in the Arctic, Mollie was offering some insight from the stars to our group, as she is a Vedic astrologer. Not going to lie, I was skeptical. As a woman of science, I thought.. “hmm, I am trying to go with the flow here but this is some woo woo shit.” But alas, I texted my mom for my birth time and within minutes, Mollie was able to generate my chart and give me a brief reading. And let me just say. Nail, meet head of hammer. It was eery how much Mollie could elucidate about me from looking at the planetary placements. I was incredibly intrigued. After I finished my yoga teacher training (YTT), I hired Mollie to do a formal reading for me. It brought me to tears. There was so much truth, some that I wanted to admit and some I didn’t, in the reading. I gained a lot of clarity on my purpose in life, the challenging energies at play, how to work with them, and how I can live in closer alignment with my true nature. After my reading, I started learning more about Jyotish(Vedic Astology), and was curious what Jeff’s chart looked like, and then my kids, and then my friends… There was a tremendous amount of googling and searching for answers on the internet, it was like the more I learned, the more questions I had. I eventually decided (about 1 month before I found out I was pregnant with #3) to sign up for a Vedic Astrology mentorship. So for the past 6 months, I have been taking classes (often starting at 4AM AK time) to deepen my understanding of this science and how it can be practically applied to our lives.
Here is the thing about Jyotish, I didn’t go looking for it. It found me. It resonates with how I interpret the world, human existence and just life in general. I am not here to try to convince anyone that this is a “real” science or not. I believe there are many tools to investigate/study ourselves and this is just one of them. BUT if you are struggling with life, feeling burnt out, or directionless, maybe the cosmos could hold some insight to guide you onto your true path and I would love to assist you in navigating the wisdom the stars.

Jyorish, also known as Vedic Astrology, is a Sanskrit word that translates to “science of light.” This science studies how planetary patterns at the time of birth can influence life. In this study, we use archetypal wisdom to gain insights to our lives.
In the U.S., most are familiar with Western Astrology, which is slightly different (in multiple ways and will elaborate more on this at a later date) than Vedic Astrology. What I think the most pertinent take away as far as differences go is that Vedic Astrology is based on where planets, luminaries and nodes are in real time (not perfect but close). You see, in Western Astrology, they use the tropical zodiac, which is based on a fixed calendar, meaning- this form of astrology is not astronomically correct. In Vedic Astrology, we use the sidereal zodiac. Under this zodiac, we take into account that the Earth isn't actually fixed—its position and tilt changes just slightly through the years.
So when Western Astrologers say that the Full moon is in Pisces, that is not actually what is happening in the night sky. If you get out your telescope or Night Sky App, you can easily see that the moon will actually be about 24 degrees off from Pisces, which means the moon will actually be in Aquarius in real time.

In a birth chart reading, we look at the planetary placements at the moment you were born. This can provide insights to the energetic environment that guided you into this lifetime and how it can influence you over time.

In order to do a reading, we need your accurate birth date, time, and location.

I think of an astrology reading as a tool to gain insight to yourself. Have you ever asked yourself after you made a "bad" decision, WHY AM I THE WAY THAT I AM? Do you feel like you are constantly swimming upstream, fighting the currents of everyday life? There are likely answers as to why you feel this way encoded in your birth chart. If you are going through a challenging time or you feel directionless, we can look to the energetic forces at play in your life to help gain clarity and figure out how to live more in alignment with your inherent nature. There is a positive, neutral and negative expression to all planetary placements in your chart and it is my goal during a reading to identify potential strengths and weaknesses in your life and figure out how to best work with that energy. The ultimate aim, for me as an astrologer, is to help you live in alignment with your true nature and find a sense of inner peace
